Frequently asked questions.

Are you able to offer face to face appointments?
I am currently on maternity leave and will return shortly, priority upon reopening will be given to existing patients, thank you for your understanding. This website is current and up to date.
How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
This will vary greatly with every patient, this will be discussed at your consultation / first treatment. Progression will be monitored at every session. It is advised to attend weekly initially and then treatments will be spaced out or discontinued dependant on the progression of the patient.  I always suggest a minimum of 5 weekly / twice weekly sessions, sometimes more sessions are required and sometimes less. Once your health as stabilised, 'top up' treatments will be of value every few weeks and graduating to monthly sessions until the complaint has resolved. Many patients then choose to use traditional acupuncture as a preventative healthcare system and visit seasonally after experiencing the benefits and making the decision to incorporate acupuncture into their health regime.

What does acupuncture feel like?
The needles I use are extremely fine, and mostly painless. Sometimes when using a stimulating technique we will aim for a specific sensation called De-qi, to ensure we have activated/stimulated the point. This can feel a little bit like an ache within a muscle, tingling, heavy, but not typically unpleasant. Acupuncture is generally an enjoyable experience and many look forward to their appointments.

How can I prepare for my acupuncture treatment?
Many commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so it is helpful to wear clothing that allows easy access to these areas
  • Try not to go for treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal
  • Do let your practitioner know if you are completely new to acupuncture so they can take extra time to explain what happens and ensure you are comfortable with the process.
  • Arrange a day that you will not be consuming alcohol before or after treatment.

Will my health insurance pay for my acupuncture treatment?
That depends on your insurer. As the demand for complementary medicine increases more private health companies are beginning to cover for traditional acupuncture. You should check your individual policy details.

How will I feel after treatment?
You are likely to feel relaxed and calm, amongst many systems acupuncture can activate the parasympathetic nervous system resulting in our ability to 'rest and digest' being optimised. Regardless of the reason for seeking acupuncture, many patients report feeling less stressed, sleeping better and feeling better in general in addition to potential benefits of treating the main complaint.

What shall I wear to my first session?
Acupuncture points are located all over the body, it is helpful to wear loose-fitting clothes whenever possible, especially on the lower limbs.

Should I still take my prescribed medication while I'm having a course of acupuncture
Yes. The acupuncture treatment may enable you to reduce or even stop taking some forms of medication with your GP's consent, you must always consult your doctor regarding any change of prescription. DO NOT stop taking medication without medical guidance.
How do I book a course of treatment?
Simply fill out the 'get in touch' section below and I will call to arrange your appointments. Alternatively feel free to call and leave a message, for a call back.

How can I read the up to date research on acupuncture in the treatment of my complaint?
The British Acupuncture Council shares a series of fact sheets here.
Can I book an appointment on somebody else's behalf?
Successful treatment requires a level of willingness and commitment of weeks or even months. It is not possible for you to make this commitment on behalf of a loved one. I insist that everyone over the age of 18 is responsible for booking and arranging their own appointments. For the same reason, I do not offer gift certificates.
I'm being dropped off by a friend or relative, where can they wait?
My home practice is small (without a waiting room) and not suitable for additional guests thank you for your understanding. We are just seconds walk from Northfield Park,  a minute walk away from Jenno's coffee shop (my personal favourite), newsagents, post office, antique shops and much more.
